Solo Dining in Austin | 15 Restaurants to Eat Alone in Austin, Texas

February 17, 2020

Are you in town for work and looking for where to eat alone in Austin and Austin restaurants solo-friendly? Look no further! My wonderful boyfriend works in consulting and is always eating alone in different cities, so he helped me pick out the criteria for a good restaurant to eat alone at in Austin.

How Did We Pick These Restaurants to Eat Alone At?

1
// Less date-night vibes with couples, and more fun and friendly vibes
2 // Great bar-service or normal for people to eat at the bar
3 // Easily can pull your laptop out without it being a thing
4 // Can order at the counter rather than wait for a waiter/waitress

These are the four items we focused on, and obviously while most restaurants don’t fit all of these they fit at least a few! We are also here to highlight exactly WHY the spot is on this list, so you know what you’re getting into. Let’s get started on those restaurants to eat alone in Austin!

Hank’s Austin

$$ // Southern American Food // in East Austin

One of the most beautiful restaurants in Austin, Hank’s is perfect for a happy hour cocktail and a delicious burger! They double as a cafe, so pulling you laptop out while you eat is totally normal (and I do it all the time). Also, they have a lovely bar you can sit alone at and be served the full menu. Plenty of parking available too!

East Austin Brunch - Bird Bird Biscuit
Bird Bird Biscuit

Bird Bird Biscuit

$$ // Brunch Restaurant // East Austin

This is, without a doubt, MY FAVORITE THING TO EAT IN AUSTIN TEXAS. I am not kidding. Bird Bird is a great spot to pick up your morning breakfast biscuit or your lunch breakfast biscuit. I understand i’m mostly listing dinner restaurants here, but like this place had to be on the list. Theres tons of seats so you can eat your biscuit at Bird Bird no issue!

Fresa’s South First

$$ // Mexican Taco Restaurant // in South Austin

If you want classic Tex-Mex with some amazing tacos and queso, then definitely head to Fresa’s! You can enjoy their outdoor patio solo no problem, and it’s not odd at all if you pull out a laptop. They also have indoor seating and booths, but the outdoor patio is really the way to go here. Highly recommend their queso!

Clark’s Oyster Bar

$$ // Seafood Restaurant // in West Austin (Clarksville)

A great spot to sit at the bar and enjoy some delicious oysters & seafood! A lot of the restaurant is bar style seating, so nothing out of place there. Also, their seafood is amazing and worth a try! The perfect space if you want an upscale (expensed) meal!

restaurants for solo dining austin || via 313

Via 313 Pizzaria

$$ // Pizza Restaurant // in East Austin

Via 313 is highly regarded as one of the best pizza restaurants in Austin, so if you’re craving some then I would stop here for sure! You can eat at the bar, at a table inside, on their outdoor patio, OR just pick it up and take it back to the hotel with you. Either way, this is a great solo spot even if you’re sitting on the couch rather than the bar.

Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden

$$ // Food Truck Park // in South Austin (Farther South)

Okay, so this is not actually a restaurant. It’s a beer garden with a TON of local food trucks outside. But that makes it iconic Austin right there! Grab a beer (or coffee), pick up some delicious BBQ from the food truck (may I recommend Leroy and Lewis), and enjoy it all on their gorgeous outdoor patio. I’m always on my laptop here, so nothing weird about that. There’s nothing more Austin than that.

Eberly Austin

$$$ // American Restaurant // in South Austin (Near Downtown)

Firstly, this is one of my personal favorites in Austin. It’s absolutely stunning, and the food is fabulous. The reason it’s on the list is that it’s SO LARGE that you can easily get a table and full meal without anybody even realizing you’re there. They also have plenty of bar space at their beautiful bar, if you’re feeling that. But if you want a normal restaurant experience and don’t care about a bar or a laptop, go here.

Better Half Coffee & Cocktails

$$ // American Cafe // in West Austin (Clarksville)

A sucker for an all-day cafe! They’ve got killer burgers, coffee, and cocktails here so if that’s the vibe then this is it. You can sit inside or outside on their giant patio, and either way nobody will question it if you pull out the laptop. I’m here eating a burger all the time, and I never think it’s weird!

bKinda Tropical

$ // American Casual // in East Austin

This is one of my favorite to work from and eat at! Their food is great and i’m a sucker for their queso and their vegan options. They’ve got LOTS of great drinks as well if you wanna pair that! But there’s always plenty of people eating and drinking solo here, so it won’t make you stand out at all. Plus it’s a local favorite, so you’re pretty unlikely to find any tourists at Kinda Tropical!

Patrizi’s Food Truck

$ // Italian Food Truck // in East Austin

Not your normal sit down restaurant, but the food absolutely will not disappoint. By the Butterfly Bar is this incredible Italian food truck that most in Austin will agree is the best Italian in town! You wait in line (I have never waited more than a half hour) and then can sit anywhere on the patio to enjoy!

Terry Black BBQ

$$ // Texas BBQ Restaurant // South of Downtown Austin

If you’re craving some true Texas BBQ, then go here for sure! They have some of the best in town, and it’s perfect to eat alone because it’s all counter service and no wait staff to worry about. Plenty of smaller tables if you want to hang out by yourself and not deal with people! Plus indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor area looking at the lake.

Batch & Taco Branco BBQ

$$ // Texas BBQ Food Truck // in East Austin

Another great Austin location! Batch Kolaches has some of the best beer and kolaches and town, and just got a taco branco food truck in their beer garden with delicious BBQ and tacos. This is a great spot to get delicious Austin food and enjoy the patio with your laptop. No weirdness eating alone in Austin here!

Epicerie Austin

$$ // Modern French Restaurant // in North Austin

Perfect for someone that wants a lovely French style upscale meal, but with solid prices! This little bistro has iconic Paris vibes, which means eating alone at a table is perfectly normal. They have plenty of smaller tables inside, and then plenty on the patio as well.

Two Hands Cafe on South Congress

$$ // Cafe // South Congress

An easy one because as you can see from my literal image above, this guy was eating alone here too! Two Hands is a cafe off South Congress street, which makes it SUPER convenient for anyone who is already off South Congress at one of the many hotels there. But they’re a great lunch cafe and have lots of bar space for dining, making it easy to eat alone here!

Hope you found this article helpful! There are some many great options for where to eat alone in Austin and good restaurants for eating alone in Austin, but these are some that I would go to personally. Hope you found one worth trying!
